Measurable training for combat sports

Turn every training session into measurable progress.

CombatSense combines smartphone video, AI and sensor technology to help combat-sport coaches measure technique, timing, accuracy and consistency — and see what an athlete should work on next.

Built with clubs, not for them — we are developing this in real training halls Start with a phone — sensor hardware is optional and comes later Danish engineering, EU data handling from the first session

The problem

Coaches see the movement. Measuring the improvement is harder.

Every experienced coach can spot a technical fault within seconds. What almost nobody can do is prove, in numbers, how much that fault actually improved over eight weeks of work.

Technique is subjective Two coaches can watch the same kick and grade it differently. Neither of them is wrong, and neither can show their working.
Progress is hard to quantify Video shows what happened. It rarely tells you how much an athlete improved, or whether a correction actually held under fatigue.
The data is fragmented Video, impact, footwork and training history sit in separate places — phones, notebooks, memory — if they are captured at all.

One concrete example

What if a coach could measure this?

A roundhouse kick, filmed on a phone at the side of the mat. Instead of “that looked better,” the coach gets the same handful of parameters every session — and can compare them across ten weeks.

How it works

Four steps, and the first one is a phone.

01RecordPlace a phone beside the training area. No rig, no wiring, no new bag.
02AnalyseCombatSense identifies the movement, the timing and the repetitions.
03MeasureOptional sensors add impact, contact and footwork data when you need them.
04ImproveCoach and athlete see what changed and what to work on next.

AI doesn’t replace the coach.

CombatSense gives coaches another set of eyes, and measurements they could not easily collect before. Every finding is put in front of a human who knows the athlete, and who decides what to do about it.

AI measures. Coach decides. Athlete improves.

Technique

Joint angles, trajectory and body position through the movement.

Timing

Execution time, recovery time and repetition cadence.

Consistency

How much the same technique varies across a set, and under fatigue.

Progress

Session-to-session comparison on the same reference, over months.

Built first for taekwondo

One sport. A handful of techniques. Properly.

A measurement system that half-works across every combat sport is useless to all of them. We are starting with taekwondo, where technique is visually distinctive and technical quality decides gradings and matches.

Boxing, kickboxing, karate and MMA follow once the first techniques are validated with real athletes.

First techniques

  • Roundhouse kick (dollyo chagi)
  • Side kick (yop chagi)
  • Front kick (ap chagi)
  • Kick combinations and repetition sets

Optional hardware

The phone comes first. Sensors expand what we can measure.

CombatSense is a measurement platform, not a smart accessory. Vision does the work on day one; purpose-built sensing is added where a camera genuinely cannot see what matters — contact, pressure and footwork.

Phase 1

Smartphone vision

Record, analyse and compare technique with a phone and the coach dashboard. This is what Founding Clubs run today.

In pilot
CombatSense 360 modular sensor cover concept for heavy bags
Phase 2

CombatSense 360 sleeve

A modular cover that turns an existing heavy bag into a sensed target: strike location, cadence, repetition and relative impact.

Engineering prototype
CombatSense floor mat concept for footwork and balance analysis
Phase 3

Footwork mat & break trainer

Pressure sensing for stance, weight distribution and movement path, plus an instrumented target for breaking preparation.

Concept development

Impact figures will be reported as relative impact and impact consistency until the sensing hardware has been calibrated and validated. We will not publish force values we cannot defend.

Founding Club programme

Don’t take our word for it. Test it with your athletes.

Choose one technique. Measure a baseline. Train it as you normally would. Measure it again. A Founding Club engagement is built around one question: can CombatSense help your coaches see and measure improvement they could not easily measure before?

  1. Choose the athletesTen to twenty athletes who train regularly.
  2. Choose the techniqueOne movement to start with — the roundhouse kick, for example.
  3. Establish the baselineWe record the first sessions and set the reference.
  4. Train as normalYour coaching continues unchanged. We stay out of the way.
  5. Measure againSame technique, same setup, compared against the baseline.

Who is behind it

An instrumentation company, not an app studio.

Questions clubs ask

Do we have to buy hardware?

No. Founding Clubs run camera-first — a phone beside the training area is enough to start. Sensor hardware is optional, comes later, and is offered to Founding Clubs before anyone else.

What does it cost?

Founding Club scope and terms are agreed individually, because the work involved differs a lot between a club with ten athletes and a national programme. Tell us what you want measured and we will give you a straight answer, including if we think it is not worth it for you.

Is this finished software?

No, and we would rather say so. CombatSense is in active development. The visuals on this page are prototypes and the numbers shown are illustrative. What Founding Clubs get today is real analysis of real athletes, delivered with engineering support, plus influence over what gets built next.

Most of our athletes are children. What about consent and GDPR?

Handled as part of the engagement. Parental consent forms in Danish and English before any camera is set up, footage and reports stored on EU infrastructure under a written data processing agreement with the club, and deletion on request for any individual athlete without affecting the rest of the group. The club keeps the paperwork.

Will this replace our coaches?

No. The system measures; the coach decides. Every output is designed to be reviewed, corrected and personalised by someone who knows the athlete. If a finding disagrees with your head coach, your head coach is probably right and we want to know about it.

Which sports does it support?

Taekwondo first, starting with a small set of kicks. Boxing, kickboxing, karate and MMA follow once those techniques are validated on real athletes rather than in a lab.

Become a Founding Club.

Tell us your club, your discipline and the one technique you would most like measured. We reply within two working days with a proposed date — or an honest explanation of why we are not the right fit yet.

Not ready to apply? We will bring a camera to one of your normal sessions and analyse a single athlete at no cost, so you can judge the output before committing anything. Ask for the demo session.
